
BSIS INITIAL /Renewal BATON PERMIT
Class Fee: Cash only, as listed on the schedule. Fees may vary by location. See below for more details on expenses (If applicable i.e. Application fee and fingerprinting Fee).

Total Hours: 8 Hours.

Documents to Bring: Valid, Govt. issued picture ID. Bring a Valid Guard Card or Proof of taking Module I. (Current Baton Permit for Renewals).

Dress Code: Business Casual. A shirt/top, with pants/jeans/dress are preferred. No shorts, No Tank Tops, No Crop Tops, No Spaghetti Tops, No Low Cut Tops, No short or mini dresses. Women must wear supportive brassieres for Defensive Tactics. Shoes or boots closed-toe and heels covered. No open-toe footwear. No Uniforms, Patches, Shields, or Badges for Police or Security. Bring a jacket as it can get cold.

Additional items to Bring: Working pen and notebook. Bring a packed lunch for yourself. Eye and Ear protection. Bring your duty belt and Baton with Baton Holder, if you have them. DO NOT BRING A GUN.

Application for Baton Permit
After completing and passing the 8 Hour Baton Course, you will be eligible to apply for a Baton permit from BSIS.

Application fee for Baton permit to the State is additional $60.

Starting Jan. 1st 2024, all Baton permits will expire in 2 years from the date of issue.
Applications will be completed in class and will be ready for submission with details.

Can I carry a Baton before I receive my Baton Permit?
It is illegal (Felony) in California to carry a baton without a permit.

Can I get a Baton Permit with a criminal record?
BSIS is the only organization that can answer this question. Please contact them.

Is there a written test?
Yes. The written examination contains 24 questions, with each question worth one point. To receive a passing score, students must obtain a minimum score of 20 points AND correctly identify the vital areas of the body to be avoided
If BSIS denies me a permit, do I get a refund?
No. There are refunds from state or for any class.
Does the Baton Permit expire?
YES. Starting 01/01/2024 Baton Permits expire. Baton Permits are valid for two years. The expiration date is printed on all new and renewed cards.
If I fail the course, do I get my money back?
No. However, you will be allowed to retake the test the same day.
If I completed PC 832, do I still have to take this course?
Yes. PC Section 832 training is not accepted by BSIS and cannot be used as a substitute.
Will this class teach any hands-on tactics like handcuffing?
Class covers hands-on Baton techniques and tactics. Defense Academy offers Handcuffing techniques & tactics by offering a specific class.
