Range Training Checkoff List

If you violate the venue/facility rules and the venue/facility managers or staff ask you to leave, there is nothing your instructors or Defense Academy Staff can do to help you. Facility Rules DO NOT care about state law or the constitution, they are designed to keep you safe from dumbasses and prevent lawsuits!

4 Most common reasons for being removed from facilities are:

Attitude - Careless Gun Handling - Littering - Speed Limit/Parking -

Firearms, Magazines and Ammo:

  • All guns need to be unloaded and fully enclosed inside a box, bag, or case.

  • Ammo and Magazines need to be in a separate container.

  • Your firearm is in good working order with adequate lubrication.

  • The Ammo is specified for your gun and it has no issues cycling or functioning.

  • Be sure to bring enough Ammo for your qualification or training.

  • Duty Belt with a Holster & Magazine pouch) specific for your firearm for Re-Certifications, Qualifications, and Renewals (Not required for New Permit Classes).

  • At least 2 magazines, ideally you should bring enough to complete the Course of Fire for your event.

  • Speed Loader or load assist if you have weak hands or have issues loading the magazines.

Dress Code:

  • Comfortable eye protection. If you have prescription glasses, they are okay.

  • Hearing protection. Highly recommend an electronic hearing aid like Howard Leigh Impact Sport, but regular plugs will also work.

  • Loose comfortable clothes that will allow you to get into dynamic positions and not rip your clothes.

  • We recommend full-sleeve shirts that keep the hot sun and hot brass off you.

  • Scarf, Shemmagh, or a button-up shirt to keep hot brass out of your top.

  • Pants with pockets that have sturdy belt loops for the inner belt.

  • Sturdy inner belt (and keepers) to secure your Duty Belt or Holster.

  • Duty Belt with a Holster specific for your firearm for Re-Certifications, Qualifications, and Renewals (Not required for New Permit Classes).

  • Jacket, as it can get cold with the fog rolling in. Check the weather beforehand.

  • Cap to keep the sun out of your eyes when the Sun starts to set.

  • No clothes with POLICE or SECURITY visible. No Patches, badges, shields or 'Stars' which are visible.

  • Comfortable closed-toe shoes that will allow you to stand for extended periods on the range (Dirt, Grass, Gravel, pavement or concrete, etc). Sneakers are fine.

Equipment & Food:

  • A comfortable chair to sit on because not all ranges have good chairs.

  • Kneeling pads, if your Course of Fire or Qualification requires kneeling.

  • A working pen with notebook.

  • Flashlight, if drills require low light shooting (Other than the weapon mounted).

  • Snacks/Food and drinks that do not require cooling or heating.

Knowledge:

  • If you are shooting for Renewal, or re-certification, PLEASE know the course of fire. This will make your shooting event free of stress and anxiety.

  • Know how to manage ammo for your shoot, not having enough rounds can cause frustration.

  • Know how to field strip and clean/lube your gun to clear malfunctions in your firearm.
